Dangerous Leak Problems Can Cause Mold Smoking and water leaking problems can be caused by many different things. Water leak problems, unless from an obvious cause, must always be inspected, & Repaired to Prevent Mold
The most frustrating chimney repair home owners encounter is leaking chimneys. Chimneys can leak at several different areas including the chimney crown, chimney cap, chimney roof flashing, corbelling, chase cover and can even soak water into the chimney by porous bricks. Many times roofers blame leaks on the chimney and the handy-man blame leaks on leaking roofs. The truth is that each case may have different reasons why the chimney leaks and it literally take years of experience to know what causes these leaks. This is why the chimney repair business is a specialized profession. The more experience you have with chimneys, the more likely you can correctly diagnose the proper chimney repair.
If your chimney is in need of repair, call the chimney experts at Chim Chimnee & Cerrito Chimney Masonry. We are Expert Masons and Chimney Repairs are what we do

Often the corrective work necessary to eliminate a smoking or water leak problem is simple and inexpensive.
The following is a list of things you can try concerning smoking problems. If you have already checked these things, contact our office and we can schedule an appointment to inspect your fireplace and chimney
- When was the chimney cleaned and inspected last? (should be yearly if being used)
- Does the damper open all the way?
- Is the fireplace grate all the way against the back firewall? (It should be)
- Does the grate have good air space underneath (4 inches)?
- Is the wood seasoned and dry? (damp wood will smoke, so will green wood)
- Does it smoke the entire time (chimney is dirty, structurally incorrect or Central Heat is on) or only when starting it and when burning down? (probably Central Heat is on or cold air in the flue)
- Is the Central Heat on when your lighting and burning the fire? (Central Heat systems will draw air from the fireplace. Central Heat should be off at least when starting the fire and when its burning down. If it causes a problem during normal burning - turn the Central Heat system off) When lighting the fire - start the newspaper or firestarter then immediately hold up a roll of burning newspaper below the damper (above the fire) to get the warm air to start going up the flue - creating the draft. Sometimes called "priming the flue". Cold air is heavy and it takes a few seconds to clear it out.
- Do you have a whole house fan or any other type that is on? (Turn it off - they also can draw air from fireplace)
- Are there any trees or anything else that would interfere with air flow at top of the chimney?
- Is there a chimney cap at the top? (occasional smoking could be caused by wind gusts - called "back puffing". We should inspect and install a chimney cap) Does the screen look dirty? (If screen material is clogged, chimney and cap must be cleaned)
- Are there smoke stains over the opening? (Evidence of previous smoking problems - should be cleaned and inspected)
